Modak Design Information

It started off as a hand-sketched lettering experiment to test the unexplored possibilities of very heavy, yet legible letterforms in Devanagari. What emerged were plump characters whose curves merge into each other, forming distinct counter shapes. As we translated the sketches into a functional font, characters were fine-tuned and multiple vowel signs were designed to match precisely with every character. These overlapping vowel signs are a feature unique to Modak. As opposed to a mere composite of two separate glyphs, each conjunct was drawn as a single entity. The challenge was to maintain legibility and consistency across all characters, irrespective of the structural complexity of the script. The resulting typeface is one of its kind and most likely the chubbiest Devanagari typeface to be designed so far.
